Another side of the national holiday of July 14th: Police in France used tear gas on Wednesday to fight protests against a plan by President Emmanuel Macron. This president’s plan calls for a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or negative PCR test to be required starting next month in order to gain access to bars, restaurants and movie theaters. Macron announced this week far-reaching measures to combat the rapid rise in new coronavirus infections. These include compulsory vaccinations for healthcare workers and new rules for the health pass for the general public. In doing so, he went further than the governments of most other EU countries. Police stepped in shortly after dozens of demonstrators marched down a boulevard in central Paris on Wednesday without permission from the Parisian authorities. Some wore badges that read “No to health passport”. Other proposals in the government’s draft law include compulsory isolation for 10 days for anyone who tests positive, with police carrying out random checks, French media reported. The prime minister’s office did not respond when asked to confirm the details. Wednesday’s protest took place on Bastille Day, the anniversary of the storming of a medieval fortress in Paris in 1789, which marked the turning point of the French Revolution.
