Never had a rap song obtained these two prestigious awards. This is America, piece by the American Childish Gambino, won the awards for “song” and “recording of the year” Sunday, February 10 at the Grammy Awards.
Stuffed with pamphlets against the excesses of all stripes shaking American society, this song swept aside favorites Drake or Lady Gaga in the race for this prestigious award. The clip accompanying the tube was also awarded.
In this provocative video, Childish Gambino (whose civil name is Donald Glover), shirtless and dancing, denounces the reign of guns and racism in the country with an uncompromising portrait of the lives of many black Americans, between shootings bloody and reminiscent of slavery. The clip had attracted more than 35 million viewers on YouTube in just two days. The view counter is now approaching half a billion views.
In total, the rapper-actor-screenwriter was one of the big winners of the evening with four awards. Childish Gambino, however, refused to appear on stage at the gala evening. He did not come to take possession of his trophies either.
Country singer Kacey Musgraves won with Golden Hour the album of the year at the Grammy Awards, while the Briton Dua Lipa, 23, was named “revelation of the year”.
