Video card Radeon RX 6900 XT overclocked to 3 GHz, but only after modification

The first experiments on extreme overclocking of the Radeon RX 6900 XT showed that with any cooling method, the frequency can only be raised to 2.8 GHz. New records in the performance of the Greek overclocker gave new hope, since the frequency of the GPU was raised to 3.0 GHz, but it was not without hardware modification.

Video card manufacturers and GPU designers are forced to balance between the need to maximize performance and maintain performance during the warranty period of the video card. As a result, there are some restrictions in the area of increasing frequencies that are very difficult for overclockers. In the case of the Radeon RX 6900 XT and Radeon RX 6800 XT video cards, enthusiasts felt them to the fullest – overclocking the GPU in most situations was limited to 2.8 GHz, even when using liquid nitrogen.

The Greek enthusiast with the pseudonym OGS managed to get things off the ground by using a special EVC2 module (pictured above) for external power management of the video card, developed by the Swedish overclocker with the operational callsign Elmor. This simple $ 32 device paved the way for boosting the frequencies of the Radeon RX 6900 XT to 3000/17200 MHz (GPU / memory) using liquid nitrogen. The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X central processor using a similar cooling method was able to overclock to 5410 MHz. In tests 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra and Extreme this allowed to score 17 640 and 33 645 points, respectively. These are the best results among all single video cards in this test category.
