Goodwood’s “Speed Festival” is a mountain track in private territory, once a German racer in 1999 Niks Haidfelds set a record with the F-1 car “McLaren-Mercedes MP4 / 13”, equipped with the British “Ilmor” V10 engine – the formula covered the 1.86-kilometer track in 41.60 seconds. The record was not broken for 20 years, until it was broken by the Frenchman Roman Dima with the VW electric racing prototype “ID.R.”.

At the time, VW was making a sprint version of its racing prototype specifically for the event, with a more compact battery pack and soft rubber “Bridgestone Potenza” tires. Result for “ID.R.” the mass did not exceed a ton, but the power unit developed 680 hp. This allowed the electric car to travel in 39.90 seconds, which was 1.7 seconds faster than the McLaren-Mercedes formula.

However, the British company McMurtry Automotive also managed to break this record. Its single-seater Speirling is equipped with an active aerodynamic propulsion system. It delivers two tons of equivalent traction literally from the start, allowing it to accelerate faster from a standstill to 100 km / h than a motorcycle in a second and a half. This British electric car traveled 39.08 seconds. The McMurtry Speirling electric car has more than 1,000 hp per tonne – it is equipped with an 800-volt battery with a capacity of 60 kWh, as well as two electric motors.

McMurtry Automotive is a start-up in 2016 that demonstrated the Speirling concept at the Goodwood Speed Festival last year. The company is currently accepting orders from interested parties for the public road version of this model.
