Despite astronomers’ concerns, the conditions for monitoring a partial lunar eclipse in the Czech Republic on Monday were more than ideal. For example, in the Ostrava region, people could enjoy the view of the disappearing full moon for over half an hour. The inhabitants of Central Bohemia were thwarted by the end of the celestial clouds, but they did not have to be sad.
Anyone who was not lazy to get up on Monday morning could observe a partial lunar eclipse in the sky. Astronomers speak of exceptionally good observational conditions, despite the fact that the Moon traveled across the sky very low.
“This lunar eclipse will take place very just above the horizon, so the observation conditions can be very bad,” experts from the Czech Astronomical Society warned in advance. In the end, however, their fears did not materialize.
“The conditions were really great. Astronomers judge the observation conditions according to the air turbulence. Today the air stood like nailed … Absolutely calm air, without vibration, perfect image, we were very happy,” described Pavel Suchan from the Czech Astronomical Society.
A partial lunar eclipse began at about half past four in the morning of our time. After five o’clock in the morning, the moon set. While people in the Ostrava region could enjoy the celestial spectacle until the end of the moon, people in Central Bohemia had to make do with shorter observation times. “There were already clouds over the southwest, somewhere over Šumava. That month hid on us,” Suchan explained.
The full moon entered the earth’s shadow at 3:32:07 CEST. “At that moment, even if we were already awake, we wouldn’t notice anything with our eyes. Only after a quarter to five will the upper left of the Moon seem a bit ‘smoky’,” explained Martin Gembec of the Czech Astronomical Society (ČAS) and the Liberec Science Center Planetarium. iQLandia.
The Moon entered the full earth shadow at 4:27:53 CEST. “It will appear black to the eye, but in the photo with a longer exposure time we would find that its center is red and the edge is gray-blue to gray. This is due to the refraction of the Sun’s light in the Earth’s atmosphere. the source of the bluish edge of the shadow, so in the denser, through which only red light passes and the other colors are scattered, “added Gembec.
Within Europe, the total eclipse phase could be observed by people in western France, Spain, Portugal or the Azores or Canary Islands. The Americans had the best observation conditions.
In the Czech Republic, the next partial lunar eclipse will be observable on October 28 next year. In 2025, we should see a total eclipse.
