Farewell to the Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro Friday, his supporters, in his first statement on social media since his electoral defeatshedding a few tears two days before the end of his mandate.
During his speech, the outgoing far-right president did not ask whether he will hand over the presidential sash to his successor, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, on Sunday, as required by the inauguration protocol.
“The world will not stop on January 1 (…) There is a great future ahead of us,” Bolsonaro said.
“We are losing the battles, but we are not losing the war”, added the outgoing president, narrowly defeated by Lula in the October elections.
Bolsonaro is expected to travel to the United States soon, noting that the Directorate-General of the Presidency has allowed the departure of those charged with protecting the “future ex-president” traveling to Miami “from January 1 to 30, 2023,” the Official Gazette reported on Friday .
Bolsonaro did not mention this trip in his speech, but he directly addressed his supporters who are still camped in front of the army barracks, in front of the army headquarters in Brasilia and other cities to ask for military intervention to prevent to Lula to take office.
“I never expected to get here,” Bolsonaro added, crying, “At least we postponed the collapse of Brazil Four years of this harmful leftist ideology.
He also said “I gave it my all.”
In front of his official residence at the Alvorada Palace, protesters watching the live broadcast shouted “coward” and “shame on you”.
Since Lula’s victory, Bolsonaro has lived almost alone in Brasilia, away from the spotlight.
