Australia secures anti-Covid drug from Merck

Australia buys 300,000 doses of a possible medicine against Covid-19 from Merck. According to experts, “molnupiravir” could reduce the likelihood of dying or hospitalization in particularly vulnerable patients by half. The drug has yet to be approved in Australia. It is still in the clinical test phase. Several Asian countries also want to secure early access to medicine from Merck. Thailand is negotiating over 200,000 doses with the US pharmaceutical company. The first pills could arrive in Thailand as early as December, but this depends on the approval of the drug by the US FDA and the Thai authorities. South Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia are also in talks with Merck. The Philippines hoped to have access to the drug as they were involved in the studies. The US government has already signed a contract to supply nearly 2 million cans. In response to a request from Reuters, the Ministry of Health in Berlin said on Monday that it was closely monitoring the development of new therapies against Covid-19.
