A Russian Il-76 military transport plane crashed on Tuesday in the Ivanovo region of central Russia with fifteen people on board, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
The reason for the catastrophe, which took place shortly before 1:00 p.m. local time (10:00 GMT), was the fire that broke out in one of the aircraft’s engines, which would have broken off in mid-flight, according to preliminary data.
The official note states that the fifteen occupants (eight crew and seven passengers) who were carrying out an instruction flight after taking off from the Séverni airfield are dead.
The Il-76 crashed into the ground in a wooded area near a cemetery in the north of the regional capital, less than 300 kilometers from Moscow.
The pilot attempted to redirect the plane and make an emergency landing at the airfield, but was unable to straighten the course and prevent the device from crashing.

The investigative commission of the central command of the Russian Air Force went to the scene to clarify the causes of the accident.
The tragedy coincided with a massive drone attack by Ukraine against a dozen Russian regions, on the eve of the presidential elections in this country.

The Russian Defense Ministry accused Kiev of shooting down the plane in a “terrorist act” that was allegedly carried out with two missiles from the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, bordering Russia. “It was shot down while flying from Chkalovsky airfield to Belgorod to transport Ukrainian servicemen for an exchange,” the ministry said.
