The Crimean Bridge, a key and symbolic infrastructure linking Russia to the annexed peninsula in 2014 to the detriment of Ukraine, was partially destroyed on Saturday by a huge explosion attributed by Moscow to a truck bomb. As a result, hundreds of vehicles are stuck approaching the bridge and drivers have to wait.
Although, according to local authorities, one lane of the bridge has been reopened to traffic, the vehicles they intend to cross are subject to strict controls. “The car traffic has resumed in one lane and the task is to prepare everything during the night so that (…) the traffic is restarted in two lanes,” said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khousnullin.
Crimean authorities announced in the afternoon that car and bus traffic had resumed on the bridge’s only remaining intact lane. Heavy vehicles will now make the crossing on the ferries. Rail traffic was due to be restored in the evening and a line operator said two trains had left for Moscow and St. Petersburg.
