VIDEO | A fire in the old La Dorcas clinic in Tournai (Tournai)

A fire broke out on the 5th floor of the old La Dorcas clinic. The unoccupied building is regularly squatted.

This Sunday, on the Marvis Bridge, the curious had their eyes turned towards the old clinic La Dorcas. Black smoke billowed from the 5th floor of the building. Firefighters were active on the banks of the Scheldt. The fire broke out around 7 p.m. and took place at the back of the building, where the rooms of the hospital were previously located. A large deployment of firefighters was sent to the scene: three pumper pumps, a ladder and a cistern. No injuries are to be deplored.

Emptied of its hospital activities for several years, the building is regularly the object of squatting and looting. Until recently, damage to the building (broken windows, graffiti, etc.) suggested that individuals were breaking into it. The presence of cables and other metals could attract their lust. In any case, this is the path favored by the investigators to explain the origin of this fire which was quickly brought under control by the firefighters and did not spread to the rest of the imposing building.

As a precaution, the children of the Les Tourelles institution, who occupy part of the building, were evacuated to the Georges Point city. They were then able to return to their building.

As for the future of this building, real estate projects should see the light of day in the medium term, thus putting an end to these problems of insecurity caused by the squatters.
