21 people die in an ultramarathon in China
– Extreme weather with extreme consequences. Twenty-one athletes were killed during an ultra marathon on Saturday in China’s northwestern Gansu Province. State media reported on Sunday that the hundred-kilometer race had started the day before in a popular tourist area with overcast skies. Social media images show that runners wore t-shirts and shorts to the race. Around noon, however, there was a sudden fall in the weather in a mountainous section of the marathon route with hail, freezing rain and drastically falling temperatures. Despite a massive rescue operation, 21 of the 172 ultramarathon participants were killed, according to the state news agency Xinhua. Eight people were injured.
