These are not all contenders currently available on the market. The cheapest electric car would be the “Dacia Spring”, but as it would not be close to offering these vehicles in terms of availability and would likely have to be left halfway on such a journey, it was not included in the top of the program. . Also not among the contenders is BMW, for example, although it has very good electric cars in its arsenal, but they are damn expensive. “Mercedes-Benz” also produces good electric cars, but, like “Tesla”, we have so far only read about them on the Internet.
With the 10 electric cars selected, the show makes a journey of 600 km together with our guests, friends and experts. The most experienced of them is an automotive engineer Andris Dambis. He not only has the experience of driving an electric car, but he has also created electric cars himself: the “Oscar eO” rally car, the Paikspikas racing “rockets” and now also electric passenger buses that run right here in Latvia.
The most fearless of the guests of the program – the Olympian Juris Šics; a person who was able to reach a speed of 144 km / h while driving a sled in his work and gets extra adrenaline in amateur car racing in his spare time. In turn, the owner of the best voice of this company Normunds Rutulis – and is also a certified auto mechanic who worked as a truck driver.
The owner of the thickest mustache, Miķelis Visockis, is not only a passionate car fanatic who saved countless BMW cars from death during his life, but he is also a solar energy expert. Kārlis Mendziņš is the manager of the “Eleport Latvija” charging network.
At the start of the test, the batteries of all cars are 100% charged. The purpose of this trip is to find out what is the difference between the cheapest electric cars and the “premium” class ones; to understand if such cars can be fully used in daily traffic.
The test start of 10 electric cars is given to “Jauna Teika” to leave for the first charging point for electric cars included in the route, which is located in the Estonian city of Viljande.
“Peugeot e-2008” (136 hp, 260 Nm), which costs from 38,500 euros, participates in the transmission test. According to factory data, it can travel 345km on a charged battery, but charging time to 80% with 100kW stations takes 30 minutes.
Although visually these cars have absolutely nothing in common, “Citroen e-C4” could be called in some sense the twin brother of “Peugeot e-2008″, it uses the same 136hp electric motor and 50kWh battery as ” Peugeot “, however, the figures on the range of this car are slightly different in favor of the” Citroen “(375 versus 345 km). It is also 6 cm longer and its starting price is also slightly lower, starting at 35,690 euros.
“Renault Megane E-Tech” is one of the most modern cars in its class. If we compare this car to Renault electric cars already in production, this is a completely different championship. The latest technologies in the development of batteries and engines allow this car, despite the power of 220 hp, to travel up to 470 km on a single charge.
“Cupra Born” is a car created by the “Volkswagen” group, the “VW ID.3” was taken as the basis for its development, which, when it came into the hands of Spanish designers, turned into a completely sporty and desirable car. “Born” is offered in three power versions (150, 204 and 231 hp with a maximum torque of 310 Nm for all modifications).
The test car program went through the only current-propelled transfer in Latvia and the entire Baltic region. The transfer station across the Gauja River in Līgatne is included in the list of historical monuments of technology and works perfectly even today. Before the war, on the site of this passage there was a bridge, which was destroyed during the fighting. After the Second World War, the Līgatne paper mill built this transfer station at its own expense to offer the workers and schoolchildren on the opposite bank of the Gauja the opportunity to reach Līgatne.
The afternoon sun is warming up and is already at its peak, but the runners have not yet reached the Estonian border. Electric batteries are enough for everyone for now, the leaders in this sense are “Skoda Enyaq iV” (314 km) and “Audi e-tron” (345 km), “Kia EV6” and “Ford Mustang” also hold their position , whose remaining mileage is almost identical (> 300 km), while smaller stocks are currently left for the “Peugeot e-2008”, which allows 178 km with 62% remaining in the battery.
While creating the “Hyundai Ioniq 5”, its designers obviously decided not to hide its technical potential. Sharp and angular lines, interesting design lights and various seemingly small things made her image sporty and unusual. But the design is not its only trump card, under the “Ioniq 5” shell hides a modern electric power system, which is powered by an 800 volt battery. It takes less time to recharge and can cover a distance of just under 500km on a single charge. In addition, if you only travel in an urban environment, thanks to the energy recovery options, the range can increase up to 686 km, the manufacturer promises.
On the other hand, “Škoda Enyaq iV” is a very spacious and practical car, which is offered in different versions. The modification with the larger battery and all-wheel drive passed the test. The price of such a car is just over 68 thousand euros.
“Volvo C40 Recharge”, despite its playful image, is one of the most powerful participants of this day’s test: 408 hp, two engines and all-wheel drive; It can reach 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds. In the basic version, it has a slightly calmer 231 hp electric motor, but the starting price is 51,908 euros.
Also in the test fleet is the legendary ‘Ford Mustang’, which has morphed into a four-door crossover and replaced its fuel-consuming heart with a much cheaper, but not slow, electric motor. Likewise, the “Kia EV6”, a car that someone in the driver’s seat could easily mistake for a “Porsche” or something similar. And, of course, the dream of every Latvian “Audi e-tron GT”. The power of this monster is 476 HP with a torque worthy of a locomotive (630Nm) and, unlike the other e-brothers, this car can reach a top speed of 245 km / h. But the price is also relevant: 103,900 euros.
In the first episode of the program, all the test cars reached their first destination: Viljande. Some cars last a long time, others could easily do almost twice or even more in the long journey … This is also the first charging point of this trip. To find out how quickly the test fleet is able to replenish its electricity reserves, a small competition is organized. Each car was given 10 minutes of charging, the data was recorded and it was discovered how many kilometers each of them can save in this time.
The continuation of the test of 10 electric cars is expected in the next episode of “Tavs Auto TV”.
