VIDEO ⟩ Riga-bound bus crash in Lithuania: cause announced

26 victims, including Latvian and Russian citizens, were taken to Jurbarka and Šaķu hospitals. There was one Lithuanian in the bus.

Edita Zdanevičiene, representative of the Lithuanian Fire and Rescue Service, says that the two victims were pulled out by firefighters with the help of special equipment.

“At 5:51 a.m., firefighters received a report of a passenger bus he left the road and turned on his side. Two passengers required additional assistance from firefighters. They were trapped and had to be taken out. Firefighters used hydraulic equipment. People were rescued and taken to hospital, and firefighters helped others get out. About 20 people were taken to the medical center, including small children,” says Zdanevičiene.

Daina Bagdoniene, representative of Šaķu hospital, says that ten people were taken to the hospital. The victims had fractures, cuts and bruises. One Russian citizen was transferred to Kaunas hospital, and the others are likely to be released soon to continue their recovery at home.

The head doctor of Jurbarkas hospital, Rūta Lukšiene, says that 15 people were taken to the hospital, including the bus driver. Most of them were Latvians. Three victims with more serious injuries – head injuries, skull fractures and soft wounds – were taken to the Kaunas clinic.

Ten people have been released from hospital to continue their recovery at home. They were found to have minor cuts and bruises.

The representative of the Kaunas hospital, Ieva Jankauskiene, says that five people were taken to the hospital.

Lithuanian authorities are still investigating the causes of the accident.
