The previous record since 1986 belonged to the German Jürgen Schult – 74.08 meters.
21-year-old Alekna made six shots for the competition, and all of them were over 70 meters. The Lithuanian’s personal record before this competition was 71.39 meters and it was broken already in the first run with a throw of 72.21 meters.

In the second attempt, Alekna achieved a result of 70.32 meters, in the third – 72.89 meters, in the fourth 70.51 meters, but with the fifth attempt she broke the world record. Initially, his result was 74.41 meters, however, after re-measurement, the new record was confirmed as a long throw of 74.35 meters. The Lithuanian scored a point for the competition with a throw of 70.50 meters.
Mikola’s father, Virgilii Aleknas, has the third best discus throw of all time – in 2000, he achieved a result of 73.88 meters.
