A man has been killed in northern Iran, where anti-government protesters publicly celebrated the withdrawal of the soccer team from the World Cup in Qatar.
Mehran Samak, 27, was reportedly shot in the head on Tuesday evening.
The accident occurred in Bandaranzali.
Many Iranians have refused to support the Iran national football team, seeing it as a representation of the Islamic Republic. After Tuesday night’s match, social media celebrated Iran’s exit from the World Cup.
In the third match of the group tournament, Iran lost 0-1 to the United States on Tuesday, with whom Iran has had tense relations for many years.
Before the first match of the World Cup, the players of the Iranian national team did not sing the national anthem in solidarity with the protesters and lost 2:6 to the English team. Before the game against Wales, the players sang the national anthem and won 2-0.
