Mumbai: Chasing a target of 538 runs in the second innings against Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy final, Vidarbha fought back and extended the game to the final day. On the fourth day, Vidarbha resumed batting without loss of 10 runs yesterday and were 248/5 at the end of play. Vidarbha need 290 more runs to win with five wickets and fifth day remaining.
Vidarbha, who were bowled out for 105 runs in the first innings, were adamant that they would not collapse like that in the second innings. Vidarbhaya came alive with the resistance of Marunatan Malayali player Karun Nair (74) and wicketkeeper and captain Akshay Wadkar (56 not out). The Vidarbha batsmen have been trying hard not to lose wickets since the morning. Karun Nair and Aman Mokhade (32) combined at the crease after Atharva Tayde (32) who added 64 runs in the 19th over and Dhruv Shore (28) in the 19th over added 54 runs for the third wicket. Substitute Yash Rathod (7) was out quickly but Karun and Wadkar held on as they added 90 runs for the fifth wicket. From the 20th over to the 87th over, Karun faced 220 balls from the crease and scored 74 runs with only three boundaries. Karun, who spent 287 minutes at the crease, was finally dismissed by Musheer Khan. Wadkar was joined by Harsh Dubey with 11 runs at the end of the game.
