Mutukulam ∙ A six-member bicycle gang attacked the UDF candidate who won the panchayat by-election. GS Baiju, a UDF independent who won at Mutukulam Panchayat 4th Ward, was beaten. He underwent emergency surgery after breaking the bone in his right leg. His left arm is also badly injured.

The incident occurred near the Kallummudu junction around 8pm on Thursday. Baiju was visiting the houses to express his gratitude for the election victory. A six-member gang arrived on three bicycles and attacked Baiju with an iron pipe and a large hammer. Baiju, who fell to the ground, was rushed to Haripad Taluk hospital and from there to a private hospital in Danapadi.

Those who were with him said Baiju said one of the attackers knew about it. Kanakakunn Police Station Officer V. Jayakumar said Baiju’s statement could not be accepted as the operation was ongoing and efforts were made to arrest the accused. GS Baiju, who was a member of the Mutukulam 4th Ward BJP, resigned and challenged again with the support of the UDF. When the results came out on Thursday, Baiju won with 103 votes and BJP finished third in the session. Mutukulam South Congressional College President Chittakkat Ravindran said those who were shaken by the UDF victory were behind the violence.
