Briton George Russell, who was to start 6th in the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, will finally start from the pit lane, his Mercedes team announced.
During qualifying on Saturday at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Russell went off the track at the very end of the session, damaging his car which had to be “repaired overnight”, indicated his team a few hours before the race, including the departure will be given at 9 p.m. These changes were made under the “parc ferme” regime, when teams are not allowed to touch F1 cars, unless they obtain authorization which Mercedes did not have. Russell will therefore start from the pit lane.
With this penalty, all drivers qualified beyond 6th place gain a position on the grid, like Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine), initially 7th.
