Borussia Mönchengladbach won a sometimes heated Rhine derby in the Bundesliga against 1. FC Köln 5-2 (2-1). Marvin Friedrich (27th minute), Ramy Bensebaini (45th / 74th), Lars Stindl (47th) and Marcus Thuram (90th) scored the goals for Gladbach. Florian Kainz (31st) on a penalty and Denis Huseinbasic (81st) scored the goals for Cologne. Kainz had to leave the pitch just before the interval with the Giallorossi.
FC immediately equalized the lead
The match began with a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the Halle attack three years ago. Marcus Thuram had the first chance in the game (8th). After about 30 minutes there is a goal to admire: Friedrich heads the corner into the net to give Gladbach the lead.
On the other hand, FC received a justified penalty just one minute later after the video rehearsals. Jonas Hofmann had committed a foul on Kainz – he converted with confidence.
Baumgart: “More than a yellow card”
But the game was one thing above all: tough. Almost all fouls were discussed in the first round with good referee Sven Jablonski. Stindl and Kainz both saw yellow cards for fouls in the early stages.
Seven minutes from half-time Bensebaini found Dejan Ljubicic, forced to retire injured. “That was the key scene for me,” said FC manager Steffen Baumgart. “With speed, below the ankle and above the knee, it’s more than a yellow card to me.” Things are not going well for Ljubicic, he will probably be out for longer.
Kainz flies off the pitch before half-time
Cologne will have to do without one more player in the next league match: Kainz caught Hofmann with an elbow in his own penalty area and, despite the protests, was rightly sent off in the Giallorossi. Bensebaini, of all, who, according to Baumgart, had already heard about the pitch, turned the penalty into a 2-1 advantage at half time.
The unfortunate raven of Cologne immediately saw his offense after the end of the match: “Really unlucky, I just look at the ball and hit the opponent. It is an obvious penalty, but obviously a very bitter scene”.
Gladbach dominates in the majority
Borussia have a dream start in the second half: Stindl shoots from distance 90 seconds from the second half and the ball ends up in the lower right corner. FC were now clearly outnumbered, Thuram missed a fourth goal for Gladbach (53./58.). Bensebaini followed after a big attack, Huseinbasic briefly gave the guests hope.
To be evaluated positively: the guests never gave up, but they had another chance thanks to Mark Uth (88th). However, scoring a goal against the top hosts was no longer enough. Instead, Thuram secured the final score.
Cologne asked Belgrade during the week
On matchday four of the Conference League group stage, 1. FC Köln will play away in Belgrade (Thursday 13 October 2022, 18:45). In the Bundesliga, the goats receive FC Augsburg three days later (15:30) and manage to eradicate the failure of the derby. Borussia Mönchengladbach are away against Wolfsburg (Saturday 15 October 2022 at 15:30).
