On Friday 14 July, Victoria Day is celebrated in Sweden, when Crown Princess Victoria turns 46. Then Sweden’s Öland is transformed into a cultural meeting place, with exhibitions and activities.
– Felt let down
Tonight, the traditional Victoria concert is also broadcast on SVT at 9pm. The Norwegian duo Marcus and Martinus Gunnarsen (21) will be seen on stage there. The boys from Trofors in Nordland came second in this year’s “Melodifestivalen”, behind “Eurovision” winner Loreen (39).
Victoria Day is especially dedicated to the jubilant because she is the country’s crown princess. But that wasn’t always the plan – and this year’s celebration comes with an aftertaste.
Hard blow to Victoria
This winter, the Swedish channel SVT released the documentary “Sveriges siste kungar”, in which the crown princess title became the subject.
Victoria was not born to be heir to the throne, even though she is King Carl Gustaf’s (77) firstborn. At that time, only men could inherit the throne.
Don’t trust Daniel
Three years after Victoria was born, however, the succession law was changed – with retroactive effect. Victoria thus became Crown Princess. The king, however, has appeared somewhat dissatisfied with the arrangement.
On several occasions, the Swedish king has given his support to the crown princess, but he has made no secret of the fact that it is his son Prince Carl Philip (44) who should be the heir to the throne.

He also did that in this winter’s documentary.
– My son, Prince Carl Philip, was born and then they suddenly change it so that he loses everything. It is quite strange, I think, admitted the Swedish king.
Female heavy
Regardless of what King Carl Gustaf may think, he is currently the last male monarch for a while.
Stole the show: – An eye-catcher
Next in line is Crown Princess Victoria, and then it is her eldest daughter Princess Estelle (11) who is expected to inherit the throne. Two queens in a row, in other words.
King Carl Gustaf admittedly clarified in one statement in January what he really thinks about Crown Princess Victoria’s legacy. There he wrote, among other things, that the accusations that he does not support his daughter are “very painful”.

“I want to clarify that my answers in the interview were not intended as criticism of either a female throne or Crown Princess Victoria. The female throne is a matter of course for me. The Crown Princess is my successor. She is an extraordinary asset to me, my family and our country. I am proud of her and what she does for Sweden.”
