Order of the British Empire
Victoria Adams, English by birth, is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, a title awarded to her directly by Queen Elizabeth II, in 2017. Her honour, among the highest in the UK, was awarded for her contribution to the fashion industry and her humanitarian commitment to Unicef and the Red Cross. David Beckham is also a OBEas it is abbreviated in English, and of much longer standing: he received the medal in 2003, when he played as a champion for Manchester United.
A shy girl
If the Spice Girls existed it was thanks to The Stagethe London-based network looking for talent in the performing arts which identified and promoted different careers: presenters, actresses, singers. Victoria Adams, in 1994, responded enthusiastically to the call of the talent who was looking for girls “street smart, extroverted, ambitious, capable of singing and dancing”. What she lacked, however, was an open character. “I’ve always been quite shy, I was never one of the popular girls at school. I was actually often bullied,” Victoria confessed in Beckham, last year’s Netflix docu-series full of revelations. “I would probably still be like this if I hadn’t met the girls.” At the announcement of The Stage Hundreds responded, but only five were chosen (including Emma Bunton only in a second selection).
Baptism from Posh Spice
The five English girls, riding the wave of worldwide success since their first single Wannabe (1996), they soon got nicknames. Victoria’s, Posh Spice, was coined by Top of the Pops Magazine. The allusion was to his style, more sober and sophisticated compared to the loud prints and maxi platform shoes of adventure friends. A diversity that immediately stood out to her as a badge of honor chic and also a touch snobbish. Their story was born in 1997 from love at first sight, a meeting after a Manchester match between Posh Spice, already famous, and the footballer not yet at the peak of popularity. The wedding came two years later. Since, they had four children: Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and the house mascot, Harper, 12. Only a crisis – also explored for the first time in the Netflix docu-series – shook their solid union.
In the early 2000s, when David Beckham was playing for Real Madrid, a newspaper gave the scoop: Victoria’s husband had a lover, Rebecca Loos, who was none other than his personal assistant. An understanding that blossomed suddenly, in a period in which the footballer was away from his family, followed by repeated nights together, the former model confided. A significant shakeup in the Beckham household, which was followed by Victoria’s move with her children first to Madrid, then to Los Angeles and to all her husband’s subsequent professional destinations. “It was the worst moment of my life,” Posh Spice said.
