Despite a good second round, Victor Perez will not play this weekend at the Phoenix Open. The Tarbais’ truncated start to the season risks costing it dearly in the medium term.
The painful 74 of the first round obliged Victor Perez to score a nice score in this second round postponed to Saturday for him due to bad weather. The Frenchman played rather well (69, -2) but he did not manage to “cut” the cut line set at -2. Despite a cold putter, the winner of the Abu Dhabi Championship 2023 hoped to get by when he was -3 for the day after 13 holes. He only needed 2 birdies to earn his place this weekend. Alas, a bogey at 17 after a stray tee shot on the left on this par 3 dashed his last hopes.
No Genesis next week for Victor
This second cut in two tournaments played this season on the PGA Tour (after the Farmers Insurance Open) is not doing its business. His start to the season was of course disrupted by his shoulder injury. But the results will have to come fairly quickly, since he still has zero points on the FedExCup counter, he who does not have the playing rights to play the Signature events which are contested without cut. So, he will not be able to play the Genesis Invitational next week.
While Matthieu Pavon has literally hovered over the start of the year for his first year on the American circuit and can already build his calendar as he sees fit, his compatriot is also qualified on the PGA Tour through his performance on the DP World Tour last year is struggling. The euphoria born from his victory in the Rolex Series a little over a year ago seems far away. Perez obviously has the resources and talent to react, but time is running out…
