The former minister during the CDR government, Victor Babiuc died on Saturday, at the age of 84. The death announcement was posted by the writer Radu F. Alexandru, on his Facebook account.

“In all the high dignities that were entrusted to him, Victor Babiuc proved impeccable professionalism and rigor. He was always a man of dialogue, respected everyone and always had an open door for those who called on him. The execution of an order received through a hierarchical way, during the mandate of Minister of Defense, brought him an unjust criminal conviction years later, which God did not take the time to correct in justice. All those who knew him will surely remember him as an exemplary man, with indisputable intellectual, moral and spiritual qualities. We have had a close friendship for over 30 years and I feel his loss with immense pain”, wrote Radu F. Alexandru.

A prominent personality in the politics of the years after the Revolution of 1989, Victor Babiuc retired from the public space for several years. He was a deputy in several legislatures (1990-2004), Minister of National Defense, Minister of Internal Affairs, Minister of Justice, but president of the Chamber of Commerce of Romania.

However, Babiuc was no stranger to problems with the law. In 2008, DNA accused Victor Babiuc of corruption and abuse of office, because he allegedly sold MApN lands in Pipera to Gigi Becali below the market price. In May 2013, Victor Babiuc was sentenced to two years in prison in a maximum security unit in Rahova prison. Following a court ruling, he was released in February 2014.
