Victims of unknown disease in the Indian city of Eluru have too much lead and nickel in their blood

Research has now shown that at least some of those sick people have too much nickel and lead in their blood. This could indicate contamination with heavy metals and not a disease caused by a bacteria or a virus, as was initially feared.

Because it is not polluted drinking water, we now look at foods that the sick have recently eaten or drunk. Samples of milk, rice and vegetables are examined. They may be contaminated with pesticides.
