Victims of Mass Shooting in New York Supermarket Are Black

TEMPO.CO, JakartaShooting what happened at a supermarket in the city of Buffalo, in the state of New York, United States, left 10 people dead and 3 others injured. The shooting was carried out by a white man aged about 18 years.

According to Al Jazeera, the shooting was racially motivated. A total of 11 victims were black and two were white.

Stephen Belongia, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Buffalo field office, told reporters the shooting was being investigated as a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism.

Joseph Gramaglia, Buffalo Police Commissioner, said the suspect killed nine customers and a retired police officer who worked as an armed security guard.

The suspect was identified as Payton Gendron, from Conklin, a New York state community about 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Buffalo.

Eyewitnesses who were at the scene described the shooting indiscriminately.

Shonnell Harris, a manager at Tops, told Buffalo News he heard as many as 70 gunshots. He fell several times as he ran through the shop to the back door.

“He looked like he was in the army,” he told the paper, describing the assailant dressed in camouflage.

Retired firefighter Katherine Crofton, who lives nearby, said she witnessed the start of the bloodshed from her porch.

“I saw him shoot this woman,” Crofton told the paper. “He just went to the shop. And then he shot another woman. He was loading groceries into his car. I came down because I didn’t know if he was going to shoot me.”

At the White House, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Joe Biden received an update on the shooting and the investigation. Biden prayed for the victims and their families.
