The Undersecretariat for Crime Prevention together with the National Institute of Statistics announced the results of the National Urban Survey on Citizen Security (ENUSC) 2023, the country’s main instrument for measuring victimization and perception of security and, for the first time, provided detailed and reliable information at the community level.
One of the main novelties of this new ENUSC is the expansion of the sample, which covered more than 49 thousand urban households nationwide, making it the second largest survey in Latin America, only behind Mexico. In addition, in an unprecedented way, it presented detailed measurements of 136 municipalities, thus achieving a statistical representation of 85% of the urban population nationwide.
This edition revealed new indicators, including crimes of robbery with or without violence, non-violent robbery, emerging crimes, cybercrime, economic crimes, vandalism, hate crimes, attempted crimes and theft.
Regarding the data detailed by ENUSC 2023, it was reported that in the historical series of the survey (households where at least one member was the victim of a crime of greater social significance) victimization at the national level reached 21.7%, an indicator that remained stable in relation to 2022, when it reached 21.8%.
Situation in the O’Higgins Region
Among the new features incorporated for this year, ENUSC 2023 includes the characterization of 136 communes nationwide, 11 in the O’Higgins Region: Chimbarongo, Doñihue, Graneros, Machalí, Mostazal, Pichilemu, Rancagua, Rengo, San Fernando, San Vicente and Santa Cruz.
Regarding the usual indicators, 17.7% of the households surveyed indicated having been victims of a crime during the previous year, which shows stability compared to the ENUSC 2022 record where victimization reached 18.0%, remaining below the national average.
Regarding the perception of insecurity, 51.5% of respondents considered that crime has increased in their neighborhood, 77.5% consider that it has increased in the commune and 89.5% consider that it has increased at the national level.
As for the new indicators, of the total number of victimized households in the O’Higgins Region, 5.5% were victims of violent crimes, a category that includes the variables of vehicle theft with violence, burglary with violence in the home, robbery with violence and intimidation, surprise robbery with violence, assaults and injuries, and the crime of extortion with violence, remaining below the national average which reached 8.1%.
On the other hand, 11.9% of households were victimized by some type of robbery, with or without violence, while 9.9% of households were victimized by non-violent robberies, 7.8% were victims of economic crimes and 6.8% of attempted robberies.
The ENUSC 2023 survey was conducted between July and December of that year and included a total of 49,813 homes surveyed in person nationwide.
