/ world today news/ On Thursday, Elizabeth Jean Carroll will testify in an American court. The former author in the fashion magazine “El” accuses the former president of rape. This is just one of a handful of cases against a politician seeking another term in the White House. About Trump’s prospects – in the material.
What is the problem?
Carroll claims that Trump abused her in a Manhattan department store in 1996 and eventually raped her. The media has mentioned this before. The former president denies everything.
“I’m here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he lied and said it didn’t happen,” Carroll said in Manhattan federal court in late April. “He lied and ruined my reputation. I’m here to try to get my life back,” she added.
According to her, Trump approached her at the Bergdorf Goodman store and asked for help choosing a gift for a friend. He was joking, he wanted her to try on the underwear, he took her to a booth. There he pressed her against the wall and raped her.
“As I sit here today, I still feel it,” Carroll told the court.
The “extremely painful” encounter was over in minutes and the victim quickly left the department store. She told two friends who gave conflicting advice. One recommended to call the police, the other – to keep quiet, otherwise Trump, an influential businessman, will “bury” her.
Statute of limitations
Carol has always voted for Democratic candidates. The former president’s lawyers tried to take advantage of this. However, she rejects any ties to politics.
The former president himself, who has not yet been summoned to court, responded on social media: “Did she scream? Are there any witnesses? Did anyone see this?”
Trump’s remark was brought to the attention of US District Judge Louis Kaplan. He described it as a “completely inappropriate public statement”.
Attorney Joseph Tacopina said he would ask the client “to refrain from further publicizing this case.”
It is not known exactly what Carol wants. The defense insists that the statute of limitations for the crime, if there was one, has already run out. In 2022, New York passed the Old Victims Act. Victims were given one year to file sexual harassment claims with the state for incidents that were barred by the statute of limitations. But even considering that 1996 event, it’s too old, according to Trump’s lawyers. The question is how the scandal affects the reputation of a politician.
Why now
Carroll remained silent for more than two decades. She spoke like other women when the #MiToo movement swept across the country. She wrote the book Why We Need Men, excerpts of which were published in 2019.
Trump called it “a complete hoax” and said Carroll’s book “should be sold in the fiction section.”
“She completely made up the story that I met her at the door of this crowded department store in New York and after a few minutes I walked out. It’s a hoax and a lie,” Trump claimed.
“I was born in 1943. Women like me are taught to hold your head high and not complain,” Carol said in turn.
And she added: she is ashamed that she hid the crime. New York State law itself helped her recognize.
What’s next
The media is speculating that her legal team will call other women as well. Trump has an impressive track record. People magazine contributor Natasha Stoinov is expected to testify that in 2005, Trump took her into an empty room and forcibly kissed her until he was “interrupted.” Celebrity Jessica Leeds also accused the former president of molesting her on a plane in 1979.
As for Carroll, she is separately suing Trump for defamation after he refuted parts of her book.
Tacopin’s attorney sent an 18-page letter accusing Judge Kaplan of bias. According to the team’s lawyer, access to the 1996 footage has been denied. He also questioned why Carroll did not sue former CBS executive Les Moonves, who has also publicly denied rape allegations against him.
A chain reaction
The former president’s defense pointed to the political basis of the case and the “domino effect” – following the trial of payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.
It also continues the controversy surrounding the storming of the Capitol in January 2021, the removal of documents from the White House, and the attempt to annul the results of the 2020 Georgia vote.
It is unlikely that this is a planned move by Democrats who want to exclude a potential challenger from the race. The prosecutions only boost Trump’s ratings. So, the CBS channel at the end of April conducted a poll: who would you like to see as president in the future and who would you vote for now. Trump had the best results in both cases.
The problem for Democrats is that Trump will be able to run even if he is convicted. And the status of “victim of the regime” will obviously add points to him.
