Victim of a big scam on Facebook, luck finally smiles on him

It all started with a lottery draw. In Canada, Christine Lauzon has just won 70 million Canadian dollars – which did not fail to read the headlines. However, this information reached the ears of a mysterious criminal who did not hesitate to usurp the identity of the winner to extract money from Internet users.

A Facebook page in the name of Christine Lauzon claimed to distribute her winnings to anyone asking her in the group. When this Internet user from Fiji came across the page, she thought it was a godsend: the roof of her house is indeed in dire need of repair – since water runs all over her house when it rains.

A generous donation of 1000 dollars to rebuild the roof of his house

“When there is heavy rain, the water always enters the house, on about half of the surface”, she explains. She then asks on the page for the modest sum of 1000 dollars to repair the roof. It was then that the criminal offered to send him 100,000 dollars instead.

“I was very happy because nobody had ever offered me so much money in the past”, she recalls, while adding that receiving so much money would have “changed his life”. Nevertheless, there was a trap from the outset.

The fake Christine Lauzon indeed asked the resident of the Fiji Islands to send her first 300 dollars in Bitcoin. Far from suspecting the scam, she then began to collect the sum, even if it was obviously very high compared to her means.

However, two twists of fate came to save him. First, reporters from CTV News discovered the scam in time and decided to contact the internet user to warn her that it was a scam before she could collect the sum demanded by criminals.

After an article was published, the story reached the ears of Travis Shawcross, CEO of Pioneer Healthcare in Ontario, who decided to do something to help the victim. He therefore decided to send him the sum of €1000 to repair his roof.

He explains : “I know what it’s like to miss everything. In 2005 I was living in a shelter in Surrey. I lived there for a month because I had nothing and was trying to get back on my feet”. The interested party still does not believe it: “He helped me. He already sent me the money. 1000 dollars to help me rebuild the house. I am so grateful for Tavis’ help!”.
