Mike Jeffries, former CEO of the American fashion brand Abercrombie & Fitch, was arrested on suspicion of sex trafficking. This is a form of human trafficking in which people are brought to other states or countries to obtain sex for money.
Two other men were also arrested, including Jeffries’ husband, Matthew Smith. That’s writing of the BBC. No further details of the allegations against the former CEO have been released. The name of the third suspect has not yet been released. Jeffries, who is now 80, was arrested in the American state of Florida.
‘The middle man went to look for men’
Last year it emerged that eight men were accused of the former director sexual exploitation. An investigation by the BBC then showed that an intermediary was looking for men who would attend the events of the Director and his husband for a fee.
Some of the men then said they were misled about the nature of these meetings. Others said they knew what happened was sexual, but they didn’t know what was expected of them.
Everyone the BBC spoke to said they had been pressured to take part in sexual activities. The middleman, James Jacobson, reportedly offered them a role as a model for Abercrombie & Fitch if they attended the meetings.
Jeffries’ attorney tells the AP that he “wants to discuss the allegations in detail after the indictment is made public.” He says he will do this in court, and not in the media.
Shop with men without breasts
Jeffries presided over the fashion line between 1992 and 2014 and made the clothes popular among teenagers and twenty-somethings. There were naked boys standing at the entrance to the shops. Customers could bring their photo.
Jeffries was already under fire when he left due to poor sales figures and reports of his desired customer at Abercrombie & Fitch. According to him, the brand was only for “cool kids” and “good-looking people”.
