“The president should recognize the decisions of the assembly” – this is how Vice President Iliana Yotova explained her words from the beginning of the week, that there were offers to Rumen Radev to become part of the assembly. In a special interview for BNT, she also commented on the accusations of political engineering in the presidency.
“The big battle and the war with the presidential institution happened when they realized that President Radev would not be part of this assembly. Undoubtedly, they would not want him to get involved himself. This is the president – the head of state of the country. Not so much from individual ministers, although I have heard of such proposals, but rather to recognize the decisions of the assembly”.
According to Yotova, the political parties, which until yesterday said one thing, and now do the exact opposite, see their guilty conscience when they see the president or when they meet their “disappointed, offended, lied to voters”.
“It is better (for the parties) that he, instead of being their corrective, be part of this assembly and remain silent,” she added.
If the president had somehow recognized this assemblage, he probably would have had the easiest second term of any president to date, the vice president believes. “But that will never happen with our mandate,” she is emphatic.
The vice-president recalled that during the series of early elections there were proposals to make the official cabinet regular.
“In 2023, shortly before the formation of the current non-coalition, there was a public invitation to this effect – for the official cabinet to grow into a regular government. Even with the argument that President Radev has been ruling together with the official cabinets for a long time, he knows the situation in the country well, he has chosen the ministers well, the official cabinet is highly appreciated by the Bulgarian citizens. And in this rather difficult situation to continue as a regular cabinet. The words are Mr. Borisov’s,” she recalled.
Yotova also responded to the words of the chairman of the DPS PG Delyan Peevski that the presidency should have the inscription “Third of March Political Party”: “There is no need to write Third of March on our building, because it is Third of March, unlike other Bulgarian politicians , is in our hearts”.
Yotova denied accusations of political engineering in the presidency.
“Firstly – there is no such party, secondly – I personally don’t see it appearing soon and whether it will appear at all, thirdly – someone is already worried about how he will work with it. There were stories in our childhood about “Neroden Petko”.
When asked if she is ready for the presidency if Rumen Radev decides to enter politics and does not complete his term, Yotova answered: “When the time comes, I will decide, if such a time comes at all.”
She defined as a double standard the association of the president with two parties – “We continue the change” and “Bulgarian Rise” of Stefan Yanev.
“Obviously, when the Change got on the back of the president to form his party, being official ministers chosen by the same president – it was not important and even in the order of things”.
Yotova responded to the accusations that some of the appointments in the office took place after the payment of money in an envelope.
“I have never seen anything like this in the presidential institution. What exactly do you imagine this looks like? If we really want to be a rule of law country, there are authorities that should be contacted after someone has information or suspicions. The prosecutor’s office, the court, yes do their job,” urged the vice president.
Yotova does not expect the impeachment procedure of the president to be launched.
