Viaplay started in Canada

The Nordic region’s biggest streamer, Viaplay, has made its debut in Canada, continuing its expansion into North America after launching in the US on February 22nd. The direct-to-consumer platform advertises itself as the premier platform for Nordic noir, a term used to describe the growing subgenre of Scandinavian crime, thriller, dark comedy and young adult offerings.

Available in all Nordic and Baltic countries, Viaplay has been gaining ground in recent months, expanding into Europe, the UK and Australia. In February, the company reported an 83 percent year-over-year increase in streaming subscribers, a number that is expected to grow even more with the launch in North America.

The streamer also plans to premiere its first Canadian home production, a biopic series about the late NHL international Börje Salming, later this year. The six-part English-language series is currently in production and is being developed and directed by Amir Chamdin (“Partisan”). Following the player’s groundbreaking journey through the 1970s, it stars Valter Skarsgård as Salming, Jason Priestley as Maple Leafs talent scout Gerry McNamara and AC Peterson as controversial Leafs owner Harold Ballard.

“As the global leader in Nordic original content and creators of award-winning international series, we are delighted to offer a diverse range of content, ranging from suspenseful and compelling drama to intriguing true stories and offbeat coming-of-age series,” said Vanda Rapti, Chief Commercial Officer of Viaplay Group, North America and Viaplay Select.
