Streaming service Viaplay announced yesterday that it will postpone the presentation of its quarterly figures until the end of November. The service has owned the broadcasting rights of Formula 1 in the Netherlands since last year, but they are in dire straits. It even seems like they tried to sell the expensive sports rights.
It has been clear for a while that things are going wrong at Viaplay. In the first months, the originally Scandinavian service received a lot of criticism about the broadcasts, including the commentary and the quality of the streams that caused irritation. Things are not running smoothly behind the scenes either, which became clear again yesterday when the presentation of the quarterly figures was postponed.
According to radio station BNR, there is more going on at Viaplay. Since the company came to the Netherlands, the stock market value has fallen approximately twenty times. According to the radio station, Viaplay has offered the broadcasting rights of Formula 1 for sale, they approached RTL and Ziggo, among others. But no action was taken because Viaplay wanted to sell the broadcasting rights for the top price. It does not appear that Viaplay can quickly obtain extra money in this way and that could therefore cause problems. However, the company recently attracted three new shareholders from the Czech Republic and Norway.
