Newly promoted Holstein Kiel lost its first home game in the Bundesliga against VfL Wolfsburg 0:2 (0:2). For the first time in the history of the highest German league, a game was played in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
VfL spoiled the party mood on Saturday afternoon with a double strike from KSV. Maximilian Arnold (27th) and Sebastiaan Bornauw (30th) only allowed the away fans in the sold-out and renovated Holstein Stadium to cheer. The DFL had only granted permission for the Bundesliga under certain conditions. While Kiel still have to wait for their first points of the season, the Lower Saxony team under coach Ralph Hasenhüttl took their first three points of the season.

“We implemented our plan very well,” said goalscorer Arnold after the game. “We were ice cold,” emphasised the “Wolves” captain. “We got the standard out of nowhere,” said Kiel’s captain Lewis Holtby, disappointed. “But we can more than keep up,” he said to a team heading into the international break.
Kiel better, Wolfsburg scores
Everything was set for a football festival on the fjord. The sun was shining, the grass was lush and perfectly mown and the Kiel fans welcomed their team with an impressive choreography as they walked onto the pitch. “It’s beyond your imagination – Schleswig-Holstein has a Bundesliga team!”, said the home fans, alluding to the classic film “Cool Runnings”. The motivational boost was well received, the home team started the game with commitment and were the much more active, braver and better team at the beginning.

But the Lower Saxony team showed the Storks how quickly small mistakes are punished. Wolfsburg only needed two standard situations to turn a 0-0 into a 2-0 within three minutes. First, Arnold converted a free kick from just under 20 meters, which was deflected unstoppably by Kiel’s Patrick Erras. Then the Wolves captain grabbed the next dead ball, his free kick found the head of Bornauw, who nodded it in.
Özcan replaces injured Majer
With the lead behind them, the guests also took control of the game. The two goals conceded had an impact on Kiel, who now played much more defensively and cautiously. Timo Becker had the chance to equalize in the 42nd minute, but the Kiel player missed. Nevertheless, VfL had to cope with a setback before the half-time whistle: Lovro Majer had to leave the field injured and was replaced by new signing Salih Özcan (45.+1).
KSV struggles, “Wolves” very ripped off
After the break, the Schleswig-Holsteiners went for the element of surprise: Shuto Machino put a long ball back on the edge of the penalty area, and Fin Porath shot straight away. But his shot didn’t have enough power to beat VfL keeper Kamil Grabara. Holstein continued to try to attack, but Benedikt Pichler (60th, 90th+4) and Machino (73rd) missed the best chances to score. But KSV fans will have to wait until after the international break for the first Bundesliga goal in the Holstein Stadium.
Red card for Kiel’s coach Rapp
Wolfsburg controlled the ball and the opponent in the second half. When necessary, the guests picked up the pace a little and had their chances through Mattias Svanberg (60th) and Patrick Wimmer (70th). At the end, things got heated again on the sidelines: Kiel’s coach Marcel Rapp and Wolfsburg’s assistant coach Patrick Hasenhüttl both received red cards for complaining (90th+8).
