After the change breakdown and the end last year, VfL Wolfsburg got away with a black eye this time. New coach Kovac can cup – albeit with a dizzy spell. But his team cannot shine in Jena.
With new coach Niko Kovac, VfL Wolfsburg has overcome the first hurdle in the DFB Cup at regional football club FC Carl Zeiss Jena with great difficulty.
The Bundesliga club won 1-0 (0-0) on the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld construction site. In front of 6100 spectators, the Lower Saxony only scored the winning goal in injury time through Omar Khaled Marmoush (90 + 3).
Kovac, who won the cup in 2018 with Eintracht Frankfurt and then in 2019 with FC Bayern and lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the French Cup with AS Monaco in 2020/21, did without new captain Maximilian Arnold (back problems) and the injured one Goalkeeper Max Kruse. His team initially started out in a playful manner, but thanks to their technical superiority they tried to shine, while Jena went about their work with more fighting spirit. Both teams created good chances, but were too unfocused at the end. Jonas Wind (9th/17th) had the greatest VfL chances of taking the lead. Jena used the spaces to counter, but was too imprecise in the last third.
After the change, Wolfsburg immediately set an example. Substitute Josip Brekalo staged Ridle Baku on the right, whose cross slammed Wind (48′) from close range onto the lower edge of the crossbar. At the other end, when Sebastiaan Bornauw tried to clear the ball (54′), a deflected ball almost landed at the far post in the VfL box. Then Ren Lange (58th) extended a header, but Wlfe keeper Koen Casteels was wide awake.
The fourth-rate Jena team, who knocked out Hamburger SV in the cup in 2014, continued to play bravely. Kovac reacted and brought on Jacub Kaminski and Josuha Guilavogui after just over an hour. That almost brought the lead: But Jena’s goalkeeper Kevin Kunz brilliantly parried the header from new signing Kaminski (67th). In the final phase, Jena was almost entirely behind and was clearly visible at the end, but Wolfsburg continued to struggle. Only Marmoush redeemed the first division team in added time with a header to victory.
