VfL Wolfsburg wants to defend sixth place. This place would at least mean participation in the Conference League for the wolves. Personally, coach Niko Kovac can draw on the full.
VfL Wolfsburg can no longer catch SC Freiburg in the table. However, the aim of the wolves is to defend the status quo. “We want to play internationally, Europe was the goal – and we’re not moving away from that,” said Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac at the press conference on Thursday. “We would like to defend sixth place, which we have now for the first time this season. But now we have a very difficult away game ahead of us.” In terms of personnel, Kovac is spoiled for choice. There were 18 field players in training on Thursday, “so everyone is healthy so far,” said Kovac. The coach highlighted the recent performances of ex-Freiburger Luca Waldschmidt, who scored four wildcard goals in 2023: “I’m happy for Luci, not just for his goals but also for the robust way he’s performed lately.” Kovac doesn’t see his team in Freiburg as favorites, but: “We’re going to Freiburg with positive feelings because we’ve had a lot of good victories in the past few weeks. And we want that in Breisgau too.”
