In the 15th and final game of the first half of the season, the third division handball players from VfL Waiblingen urgently need their second win of the season against the Bundesliga reserve HBW Balingen-Weilstetten. Otherwise the mortgage for the second half of the season would be huge.
HBW Balingen-Weilstetten II (12th place, 10:18 points) – VfL Waiblingen (15th place, 4:24 points/Sunday, 5 p.m.). The newcomer from Waiblingen had made some calculations against TSB Heilbronn-Horkheim. “If you score 35 goals at home, that should actually be enough to win,” says VfL coach Tim Baumgart. However, it didn’t because the defense – as is so often the case – was too full of holes and the goalkeepers didn’t get a lot of balls. They had to reach behind themselves 41 times, with basket player Nick Fröhlich scoring 16 goals alone. “We never got access in defense,” said the VfL coach.
VfL Waiblingen failed to turn the game around
The course of the game was similar to that of several previous games: After being significantly behind, VfL fought its way back to 33:35 by the 50th minute, but did not manage to turn the game around. “We showed again that we are competitive and received a lot of praise,” said Baumgart. “But that’s no use, we need points.”
The last chance is for VfL Waiblingen in the Swabian Alb
VfL’s last chance to do so this calendar year is on Sunday in the Swabian Alb. HBW Balingen-Weilstetten II is six points ahead of Waiblingen in the table. “This is an opponent that is still within reach for us,” says Baumgart. “We don’t have to kid ourselves: This is a four-point game.”
The Bundesliga team started the season with 0:10 points, but has long since stabilized and won, among others, against third-placed SG Leutershausen. The “Gaulians from the Alb” have been able to introduce players from the second team to the professional team for years. “There is a lot of talent in the team,” says Baumgart. However, the young players also made mistakes. “I hope we can use our experience to counter this.” Can’t help, apart from Robin Stöhr and Tobias Maurer. The backcourt player suffered a torn muscle fiber. “It’s a shame because he played well against Horkheim,” said Baumgart.
