VfL Potsdam Faces Defeat Against HC Elbflorenz Dresden: East Derby Match Recap

1. VfL Potsdam had to admit defeat against HC Elbflorenz Dresden with 33:27 (17:12) this Monday evening. VfL coach Bob Hanning’s team made too many technical errors and allowed the Saxons to pull away in 15 minutes without scoring a goal on the Potsdam side. The East Derby in the BallsportArena Dresden attracted a total of 1,324 handball-loving spectators. Potsdam’s top goalscorer was Karl Roosna with seven goals.

Both teams started the second game of the 23/24 season highly motivated. Tim Grüner gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead and immediately set an exclamation mark. With the exception of Mark Ferjan, who injured his left ankle in the final training session, the entire squad was available to VfL coach Bob Hanning. The game remained evenly balanced in the first five minutes with alternate goals. With a 4-0 run, the Potsdam team managed to extend their lead to 8:4.

Then Elbflorenz coach Andre Haber reacted and took his first time out. “That was probably the best time out I’ve ever seen in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga,” explains VfL coach Bob Hanning, because that was followed by a 9-0 run for the Saxons. Accordingly, VfL Potsdam made countless technical errors and made a few missed throws from the second row. With a 5 goal deficit, the Eagles went into the break thinking (17:12).

The 21st minute brought a long-awaited reunion for everyone in Potsdam, as Maxim Orlov played for VfL Potsdam for the first time in 321 days. In October 2022, the 21-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament injury and was out for months. After a successful rehabilitation phase and continuous training, Maxim was able to get back into team training and was back on the field today for the first time in over 10 months. In the 34th minute, the 21-year-old made a breakthrough to reduce the score to 19:14.

1. VfL Potsdam didn’t find its way sufficiently in the second half either. HC Elbflorenz, on the other hand, relied on a tempo game and didn’t miss a chance to extend their lead. Andre Haber’s team was once again able to rely on their right winger Lukas Wucherpfennig, who scored a total of 10 goals for the Saxons. The goals from Tim Grüner, Cyrill Akakpo and Marcel Nowak to make it 21:17 didn’t give the Potsdam team any room to breathe, because the Saxons didn’t let up in their effectiveness.

VfL coach Bob Hanning took his last time out for the last 10 minutes. Less than 2 minutes later, left winger Tim Grüner saw the red card for a 7 meter shot that hit goalkeeper Max Mohs in the face. The game seemed clearly lost, as the Saxons made some technical errors toward the end. But Bob Hanning’s team had to admit defeat after a tough fight because the hosts were simply more effective. Statistically speaking, both teams threw at the opposing goal 48 times, but with a difference of 69 percent hit rate on the Dresden side and 56 percent on the Potsdam side.

Voices about the game:

Bob Hanning, Trainer 1. VfL Potsdam:

“It was a great handball game from Dresden today for over 50 minutes. It was a very intense game, but also very fair and very emotional, but there was a deserved winner because we had no chance in the game today. We got into it well, we also wanted to respond to the pressure with counter-pressure, which we managed to do for 15 minutes, but while last year it might have been enough, this year it just wasn’t enough against Dresden. Then I tried to change, maybe I changed too much. We then no longer had any flow to the game. We also clearly lost the goalkeeping duel during that phase and then we simply couldn’t find any solutions. We then tried to solve it over 3-3, didn’t do too badly, but then individual mistakes came up again. Elbflorenz are simply strong and they absolutely led the game. They did everything they could to make the game positive and therefore they deserved to win.”
