VfL Lübeck-Schwartau Defeats Eulen Ludwigshafen in Thrilling Handball Match with 31-28 Victory

VfL Lübeck-Schwartau wins an exciting game against Eulen Ludwigshafen with 31:28 (15:14). The Lübeck team took the lead in the game shortly before the break and were able to build on the last minutes of the first half in the second half to extend their lead. Paul Dreyer became the match winner for VfL with a total of 15 saves.

After two unsuccessful attacks, VfL’s offensive scored for the first time after two minutes through Janik Schrader to make it 1-1. After just three minutes, the referee brothers Klinke handed out the first two-minute penalty against Maximillian Haider from the guests from Ludwigshafen. Mex Raguse, who is playing in the Hansehalle for the first time after four years for VfL, scored for the first time after five minutes to make it 3-1 for the Eulen (4th).

Owls cause problems for VfL

The guests then switched to a 5-1 defense in which the Lübeck team found gaps but failed due to Ziga Urbic. Jan-Eric Speckmann converted a seven-meter shot to make it 6:7 (12th). As a result, the guests from Ludwigshafen got better and better into the game and only allowed two goals after 20 minutes. Vojtech Patzel scored from the middle (20th) and brought Lübeck back within two goals to make it 7:9.

Shortly before the break it was the Schwartau team who were able to improve their game. The Ludwigshafen team didn’t use their advantage and the hosts were able to turn a three-goal deficit into a draw with a strong tempo game – Janik Schrader scored to make it 13:13 (28th). In the last minute of the game before half-time, Carl Löfström gave VfL the lead for the first time and made the halftime score 15:14.

Swinging into the second half

VfL took advantage of Meyer-Siebert’s penalty and made it 18:14 (35th) through Ole Hagedorn. A well-parrying Paul Dreyer prevented Ludwigshafen from scoring for six minutes until Maximilian Haider scored to make it 18:15 (36′). The Lübeck team never gave up their two-goal lead, even though the Owls repeatedly strengthened their offense with a seventh field player. This resulted in two goals in a row on the empty goal by Paul Skorupa (49th) and Jasper Bruhn (50th) – and Schwartau led 27:24. Despite Lübeck’s seven goalless minutes, Paul Dreyer only allowed two goals and thus held on to the lead. Even highly defensive Owls could no longer prevent Einar Nickelsen’s 31:28 winning goal in the final phase (59th) and so VfL Lübeck-Schwartau won a close game and two points – also thanks to goalkeeper Paul Dreyer.

“That was a really hard piece of work,” said David Röhrig after the game. “We got into the game a bit bumpy and missed our first chances. But we didn’t get anywhere in defense, especially when we switched to a 5-1 formation and things started to get better. In the second half it was a tactically exciting game with Paul Dreyer, who provided strong support.”
