It all happened too quickly: Bayern Munich invaded VfL Bochum at the end of the third day of the Bundesliga and gave the hosts an entry in the history books.
With 7: 0 (4: 0) the record champions took back the lead on Sunday (21.08.2022) and currently seems not to give up until the end of the season.

The Munich side entered a duel with three XI first-time players, which ended in a memorable 4-1 victory for VfL in February this year: Matthijs de Ligt joined the team, as did Leroy Sané and Kingsley, recently criticized for his Coman body language after the ban expired. He didn’t notice that Jamal Musiala, twice exceptional at the start of the season, had to go through adductor problems: the guests left with constant pressure and turbo speed.
Sané went wild
From the start, Bochum had great difficulty getting into duels because Bayern played the ball brilliantly, which was quickly reflected in the result. After a lightning-fast combination of Joshua Kimmich, Thomas Müller and Coman, Sané threw the ball into the right corner with his weakest right foot (4 ‘).
Bochum responded bravely, with a quick counterattack, and promptly had a chance to equalize. However, de Ligt blocked Simon Zoller’s attempt in the eighth minute under great pressure, meaning Manuel Neuer didn’t have to intervene.
Losilla forgives the draw
A few seconds later, Neuer’s opponent was challenged again: Manuel Riemann parried with a class reflex against Sané, who played like wild. Twice Coman and again Sané could have easily increased to 20 minutes, but in the final they were not precise enough.
The fans had a lot of fun with the game, because Bochum also always tried to move forward immediately after winning the ball. A header from center forward Philipp Hofmann was thrown over the crossbar in front of Neuer by Anthony Losilla.
VAR decision doubtful
It was a mistake with consequences, because then Bayern clarified everything without mercy. After a corner from Kimmich, de Ligt headed for the 2-0 (25 ‘), but as he caught the ball as he jumped, the goal shouldn’t have counted. Unbelievable: VAR Tobias Welz would have awarded the hand to Cristian Gamboa, who had gone into an aerial duel with de Ligt, referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the center after a long discussion.
It wasn’t a good time for Gamboa. Eight minutes after the 0: 2 he wanted to block a high ball with a header to Riemann, but Thomas Müller intervened, Riemann slapped the ball forward and gave Coman the 3: 0.
Coman also shines as a trainer
Many VfL fans must have wished for the break after that, because Bayern even increased the pressure. A header from Coman pushes Sadio Mané over the line, but this time Welz intervenes and recognizes a hand ball that Mané had already signaled quite well. The Senegalese’s exultation was only postponed, a few seconds later he scored 4-0 (42 ‘) after another excellent pass from Coman.
The good news for Bochum came shortly after the half-time whistle, the bad news came immediately after the restart: Bayern just didn’t give up. Kimmich and Coman should have increased their lead before Mané scored from a penalty in the 60th minute: Saidy Janko had already been on Coman’s heels.
Gamboa own goal
Then Bochum was also punished: Gamboa, one of the winners of the VfL match in February with a dream goal, threw the ball past his own goalkeeper into the net when he tried to free Coman: 0: 6 after 68 minutes.
Serge Gnabry, who had just entered as a substitute, had prepared the goal and was able to celebrate even in the 77th minute: with the whole instep, he chased a low shot into the far corner for the 7-0. Zoller then has the door of honor at his feet, but the VfL can’t even do it: Neuer deflects the ball on the post. After that, Bochum’s humiliation is over, but it will certainly make its way into the club’s chronicle: it was VfL’s heaviest home defeat in club history, followed by a 6-0 defeat to Werder Bremen in the 2006 season. / 07.
Bochum now in Freiburg, Bayern against Gladbach
The VfL has a relatively short regeneration phase: Bochum will open the fourth matchday on Friday evening (08.26.2022, 20:30) at SC Freiburg. Bayern will play second-placed Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday at 18:30.
