20 years ago, VfB Stuttgart achieved one of the greatest victories in the club’s history. In his first ever Champions League home game, the outsider won 2-1 against Manchester United. We look back on the sensation.
The euphoria before the first Champions League home game in what was then the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium on October 1, 2003 could not have been greater. Since the draw for the group stage, all VfB fans had been looking forward to the encounter with Manchester United. The rush for tickets for the game was huge.
Everyone wanted to see the star ensemble from the Premier League. At that time, the English record champions’ squad included world stars such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Roy Keane. On the left wing, an 18-year-old Portuguese named Cristiano Ronaldo began to attract attention. And in the coaching bench was none other than coaching legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
VfB Stuttgart creates a sensation against Manchester United
The roles before the game were clearly assigned. Anything other than a United win, the experts agreed, would be a massive surprise. And that despite the fact that VfB went into the duel with the star ensemble as the undefeated leaders of the Bundesliga.
Contrary to all predictions, coach Felix Magath’s team created a sensation and won 2-1. In our picture gallery we look back at the game in detail. Have fun reminiscing!
