VfB sports director: Transfer summer “even more complicated” this time

Stuttgart (dpa) – Despite the corona crisis and injury misery, sports director Sven Mislintat from VfB Stuttgart drew a positive balance of the transfer period that ended on Tuesday.

“In terms of the conditions, this transfer summer was even more complicated than the last,” the 48-year-old told the German press agency. “We wanted to achieve a transfer surplus of around 25 million euros and lose as little or no quality in the squad as possible. That was demanding. But although we had to deal with a lot of resistance, we managed it well.”

The pandemic has cost the Bundesliga club more than 50 million euros so far. The sales of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel (for 15 million to Dortmund) and striker Nicolas Gonzalez (for 23.5 million to Florence) compensated for part of the losses. Because a number of professionals were canceled recently, VfB had to add more personnel in the transfer final.

VfB sees itself as “well positioned”

“Our job was actually done quite early, for example Florian Müller was quickly signed as the new number one,” said Mislintat. “But this string of injuries made it even more complicated.” Shortly before the end, the offensive forces Omar Marmoush were brought in on loan from Wolfsburg and Wahid Faghir for at least four million euros from Vejle BK (Denmark).

“We are well placed and have a squad that can hold the league,” said Mislintat. Sometimes he even expects “really hot fights when the injured players gradually return”. And: “We have also made a few anticipations for the coming summer.”
