The Schützenhilfe from Werder Bremen II did not materialize in the afternoon. But the footballers of VfB Lübeck can make the promotion to the third division perfect tonight in the game at SV Drochtersen/Assel. A draw is enough for the traditional club.
There was no initial celebration in the VfB team bus on the journey to Kehdinger Land. Since Hannover 96 II won 3-1 at Werder Bremen II in the afternoon, the Lübeckers are now required to celebrate their return to the third division on May 5th. The game at SV Drochtersen/Assel kicks off at 7.30 p.m. The Lübeckers are still missing one point to eliminate the last, minimal doubts about the jump to the top. Strictly speaking, however, there has been little doubt for weeks that VfB will return to professional football after two years.
Because league leaders Hamburger SV II have not applied for a third division license, the U23s from Hannover 96 are the only remaining competitor in the fight for promotion. VfB’s lead over the “Reds” was a whopping twelve points behind before this matchday, but the victory of 96 II in Bremen means that there are currently nine points left. In addition, the Lübeckers go into the remaining three matchdays with the significantly better goal difference.
Over 1,000 Lübeck fans expected in Drochtersen
If the promotion celebrations two years ago were more or less canceled due to Corona – the team only met for a few pints of beer at the stadium – there should now at best be a lavish green and white night on Friday. “We want to push the thing over the line,” striker Felix Drinkuth told NDR after the 2-0 win against SC Weiche Flensburg last matchday. There will be no lack of support for the 28-year-old and his teammates in Drochtersen. Over 1,000 VfB fans will accompany the Pfeiffer team to the Altes Land.

Those who cannot or do not want to make the trip to Drochtersen, around 130 kilometers from Lübeck, have the opportunity to watch the game at the public viewing in the Lohmühle stadium on Friday. The VfB entourage will then return there around midnight – regardless of whether the early promotion was successful or not. After the Flensburg game, they got an impression of what the players could expect if they made it into league three.
For minutes, the supporters sang: “Fourth division, never more, never more” and celebrated the team frenetically. “You just enjoy it,” said Coach Pfeiffer. Because: “It was just exhausting weeks and months of hard work.”
