FRIEDRICHSHAFEN – The winner of the volleyball Champions League from 2007 VfB Friedrichshafen will not participate in the upcoming edition of the prestigious competition due to financial reasons.
The German runner-up opted out because he was not granted an exemption to play in his hall for 1,000 spectators. The European Volleyball Confederation requires a capacity of at least 2,500 seats in the Champions League. Friedrichshafen announced their move on the club’s website.
The closure of the ZF-Arena in 2020 due to the state of emergency made life more complicated for VfB volleyball players. Since then they have to rent a hall, currently they play in a hangar at the Bodensee airport.
“We cannot afford the additional costs associated with the European elite competition,” said the 13-time German champion. “It’s very hot for the players and coaches as well as the whole of German volleyball,” said club boss Thilo Späth-Westerholt.
Savings measures will also affect the teams. “In the new season, we rely on a young and ambitious team that will focus on the league and the cup,” declared. Germany will be represented in the Champions League by Berlin and Lüneburg.
