18:12 Sebastian Vettel once again lost against teammate Charles Leclerc in qualifying for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Portugal. According to the four-time world champion, the Monegask is currently in a different class than himself.
Not for the first time in 2020, qualification for Vettel came to an end after the second part. The four-time world champion was sent out twice by Ferrari in Q2 with a set of mediums, but he eventually did not get further than a disappointing fifteenth position. That is in stark contrast to the achievements of Leclerc, who did qualify for Q3 on the mediums and seized the fourth starting position. That result hit Vettel quite hard. “This is not just a beat, it looks like he is in a different class. I try everything I can. Even if I do a lap that I’m happy with, then he’s faster. Right now I can’t do more than anything. to get out of myself what I have in me, “he said Sky Germany.
Obviously, after qualifying, Vettel and Ferrari’s decision to also choose the mediums for the second run in Q2 was questioned. “It is easy to say that afterwards,” countered Vettel, who himself does support the choice to use the Pirelli mediums. “In fact, I was actually happy to be able to drive the mediums because the tires felt good. But I had trouble getting the tires to work,” he says at the heart of the problem. “The car felt good on the first try. I thought I could easily beat the Q1 time on the mediums. That was the goal, but it wasn’t that easy.”
The result is that Vettel has to start the Grand Prix of Portugal from a disappointing fifteenth position. It is expected that it will not be easy to overtake at Portimao and so the Ferrari driver does not seem to be really looking forward to the race. “Next question”, he answers with a smile when asked if he is up for the race. “Today was again not a good qualifying. The race will again be a mess. Tomorrow is a new day, on which I will try to make the best of it. But of course it is always different when you have to start from the rear.”
