Veterinarians sustain support for mass sterilization policies and celebrate start of legislative process

Aware of the sanitary value of pet spayathon and sterilization clinics, Puerto Rican veterinarians Mónica G. Pagán Mutt, Víctor R. Oppenheimer Soto and María I. Cueto Ruiz reiterated their support for these activities today, always in compliance with the requirements of licensed professionals as established by the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico.

These doctors maintain their support for animal sterilization and vaccination policies, and at the same time clarified that the ruling in their favor in the lawsuit against the Government of Puerto Rico to invalidate the dispensations sheltered under Executive Order 2020-15 and 2020-18, never canceled the continuity of this type of activity.

On June 4, Superior Judge Anthony Cuevas Ramos, of the Court of First Instance in San Juan, declared null and void executive orders 2020-15 and 2020-18, which illegally consented to dispensations to veterinary doctors without a license in Puerto Rico. to practice the profession. “The lawsuit did not question the spayathones, what was raised at all times was that the orders allowed something prohibited by law,” said attorney William Vázquez Irizarry, representing veterinary doctors.

Since last year, the problem had been brought to the attention of the College of Veterinary Physicians, the Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, and the Office of the Governor, with none acting to correct it. Attempts to dialogue by the doctors were unsuccessful and they were forced to go to court.

Through their legal representative, the doctors welcomed the discussion process that began this week in the Legislative Assembly. “A legislative process has begun that is important because it validates the approach that the three veterinarians made for a long time, the requirements to practice the profession cannot be changed by executive order,” added the lawyer.

Veterinarians, likewise, Mónica G. Pagán Mutt, Víctor R. Oppenheimer Soto and María I. Cueto Ruiz, are fully willing to be part of the efforts to achieve public and private collaborations that facilitate the continuity of these events regularly through of the different areas of the Island.

“Doctors Pagan Mutt, Oppenheimer Soto and Cueto Ruiz who have a proven track record in veterinary medicine expressed their willingness to join the development of projects that benefit our pets, as well as the people.”, Concluded Vázquez Irizarry.
