50 nights; Tasneem Ezzat (veterinarian) nearly died as a result of a run-over accident she was exposed to in New Cairo, which left her with various fractures in her body and the bottom of the skull, resulting in her losing consciousness and causing convulsions and bleeding of stem cells in the brain. Until Tasneem died on April 2, before undergoing a leg amputation surgery following a blockage in the arteries, as a result of medical complications due to her deteriorating health condition.
The Public Prosecution heard the statements of the student “Abdullah” who caused the accident – running over “Tasneem Ezzat,” a veterinarian at Beit Plus Hospital, and they came as follows:
Q/ What do you say about what is attributed to you, that you are accused of wrongly causing the injury of the victim, “Tasneem Ezzat Bastawi,” and that was the result of your negligence, recklessness, and violation of the laws and regulations by driving a car in a way that would create danger, and you did not realize that the road was empty of pedestrians, so you hit the aforementioned victim, causing damage to her? The injuries described in the medical report attached to the papers, as shown in the papers?

Q/ What are the details of the incident occurring and what are the circumstances of your arrest and presentation to us?
A/ What happened is that yesterday, February 12, 2024, around 10 o’clock at night, I was walking in my Arabic car, No. T/P. 438, at the intersection of Al-Jazeera Street in the southern 90th, and after I passed the U-turn and was walking in the far north, I was surprised by a woman crossing the road from the right in front of another Arabic car. She was speeding and hesitated to cross, and I tried to avoid her, and I did not know, and I collided with her and caused her injury. I stopped and went down to check on her. I found that she had injuries. I went and called the ambulance and they came and took her. The police came and took me and took the car and brought me to the station. I spoke to one of my family members to follow up on the condition of the injured person, and they actually went and checked on her. They took care of all the hospital expenses, made the report, and brought me here today, and that’s all that happened.

A: It is a 4-lane asphalt road, and I was taking a turn from the lane at the intersection with Al Jazeera Street.
Q: What is your destination while driving?
A/ I was coming from South 90th Street, which is in front of the intersection with Al-Jazeera Street, towards the American University.
Q: What was the distance between you and the injured person, Tasneem Ezzat Bastawi?
A: It was about 10 metres.
Q/ What was the condition in which the victim first saw?
A: She was walking, crossing the road, and I was walking in the far north because I was running out of traffic, and she was walking quickly, and I was surprised by her crossing the car that was on my right. I hesitated, and I tried to save her, but I did not know that she was injured.
Q: Are there any injuries to the girl as a result of that accident?
C/ Yes.

A: There were wounds on her face and I don’t know the rest of her injuries because I didn’t go to the hospital with her and the police took me.

A: Because she was crossing the road and walking quickly, and I was surprised by her in front of me.

A: It is damage to my Arabic car and an injury to the injured person.

A: I didn’t mean to, so after the incident, I stopped the car to check on her, and the police came while I was standing and took me and took the car to the police station.
After the end of the investigation with the student “Abdullah,” his defense requested the release of his client with any guarantee the prosecution deems appropriate, as the accused has a fixed and known place of residence and there is no fear of him fleeing.
The accused’s defense presented a portfolio of documents containing a paper containing a receipt for the amount of eighteen thousand and eleven Egyptian pounds from the hospital where the injured person was transferred at the time, under the account of the patient, “Tasneem Ezzat,” until the accused was released from the department office with a financial guarantee of only two thousand pounds.
Amal Aslan, the civil rights lawyer, said that after the death of Tasnim, the victim of the hit-and-run, the record and description of the crime will be changed from injury to manslaughter, noting that the case is before the court and its first hearing is scheduled for April 30.
