Born Justice Ellis McQueen on August 19, 1927, in Beaumont, Texas, he took his stage name from his first film role in the 1955 Raoul Walsh film, Battle’s scream.
His film roles included roles in Don Siegel’s An Annapolis Story, Mervyn Le Roy Towards the unknown, y Sam Peckinpah The Wild Bunch, Ride the High Country, y Pat Garrett y Billy the Kid.
He also appeared in Martin Campbell’s The mask of Zorro, the Roland Emmerich The patriot, y Martin Scorsese Casino.
On television, he specialized in westerns, appearing in Gunsmoke, el virginiano y Bonanza.
