The experienced Advocaat, whose record number of 37 victories for the Dutch national team was surpassed by Louis van Gaal at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar, began his playing career in his native The Hague in the 1960s, but never has ever coached a team. On Friday he confirmed his latest engagement on Dutch television.
Den Haag were relegated to the second tier two years ago and narrowly missed out on a return to the elite after losing on penalties in the playoffs last season. This year, however, the team led by Kuijt has dropped to seventeenth place in the twenty-member standings.
Advocaat has been in practice for over 40 years. He has worked on the Dutch national team bench three times, he has also coached the national teams of the United Arab Emirates, Korea, Belgium, Russia, Serbia and Iraq, where he finished last November. At club level, he has been on the bench for Eindhoven, Glasgow Rangers, Mönchengladbach and Sunderland.
