A “very substantial portion” of the 47 million Spaniards could be vaccinated in the first three to six months of 2021, according to the prime minister, El País newspaper writes.
According to Sanchez, Spain and Germany are the first EU countries to have a complete vaccination plan in place.
13,000 vaccination points
“The campaign will start in January and count 13,000 vaccination points,” the prime minister said at a press conference after the G20 summit.
Spain is going to hire more medical staff to strengthen its healthcare system, Sanchez promised. “We have some difficult months ahead, but the roadmap has been drawn,” he concluded.
In Spain, more than 46,000 people have died from the virus, placing the country in ninth place worldwide.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) may approve corona vaccines from BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna in the second half of December, after which the two promising agents will be conditionally approved in Europe. But very small amounts of vaccine will initially be available, the European Commission warned Thursday.
Belgium expects to have access to the first corona vaccines from the end of December. But the lion’s share will not come until the second and third quarters of 2021, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Sunday. The United States also expects to be able to vaccinate the first Americans in the course of December, according to the head of the large-scale vaccination operation in the US, Moncef Slaoui.
