The storms that hit the Czechia over the weekend may be stronger than meteorologists originally expected. Very strong thunderstorms threaten mainly in border districts, where up to 60 liters of water per square meter can fall in torrential rains. On the upper course of the Lužická Nisa near Liberec, there is a risk of reaching the highest flood level.
However, a less significant rise in levels can be expected in most of the Czech Republic, until Sunday noon. This follows from the newly updated warning of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI).
The warning against very strong thunderstorms applies from Saturday morning to Sunday morning in the border districts of the South Bohemian, Plzeň, Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, Liberec, Hradec Králové and Pardubice regions. In Moravia, the warning applies to the entire Moravian-Silesian Region, most of the Olomouc Region and the north of the Zlín Region. “Locally, torrential rain is expected with possible intensive outflow of water from the slopes, rapid distribution of small streams and dry riverbeds,” say meteorologists.
According to them, hail and lightning will also be a danger, along with strong winds that can break branches and uproot trees. Therefore, problems in transport and energy can be expected.
Thunderstorms with a slightly lower intensity, however, are threatening in the rest of the Czech Republic until Sunday morning. In torrential rains, about 40 liters of water per square meter can fall in places. Gusts of wind can break branches and damage can be caused by lightning and hail.
The storms will result in rising levels of streams and rivers. The Lužická Nisa and Smědá river basins are already saturated from previous storms and will react very intensively to possible precipitation, meteorologists warn. On the upper course of the Lužická Nisa, they do not rule out the achievement of the third, highest flood stage.
Other rivers and streams in most of the Czech Republic can ascend to the first, ie the lowest stage, until Sunday noon. The warning against rising levels does not apply only to most of the Karlovy Vary and South Moravian regions, as well as to the southern half of the Olomouc and Zlín regions, and also to the Svitavy and Polička regions.
